Arsenal have stepped up their efforts to complete a £20m deal for Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi but will not be completed in time for Liverpool.
After Gabriel was ruled out for two months, a new centre-back has become a pressing need for the Gunners who only have Callum Chambers and Rob Holding as their fully-fit options in the heart of defence.
Midfielder Jack Wilshere has also called on the club to bring in a new defender and looks set to get his and many Arsenal fans’ wish fulfilled.
Mustafi was left out of Valencia’s squad in a pre-season friendly against a Nigerian All-Star team, sparking speculation that he is heading to London to complete a deal with the Gunners.
The Sun believe Arsene Wenger has given the green light to sign the 24-year-old but, with personal terms and a medical to complete, the transfer will not go through until early next week.
